What To Do When Someone Passes Away
When a person dies in the care of a hospital, hospice, nursing home or care facility, the staff will advise and assist with obtaining the paperwork needed. The funeral Director will then liaise with their staff to arrange a suitable collection time.
In a Hospice or Nursing Home
In a nursing home, hospital, or hospice, a doctor will usually be on hand or called to confirm the death. They will then advise if a post-mortem is required, and if not, you can contact O’Connell Funeral Directors to begin making arrangements.
What happens in case of sudden or unexpected death?
Sudden or unexpected death at home without a preconceived illness should be reported to Gardaí. Similarly, if there’s uncertainty regarding the cause of death or the deceased did not see their physician at least 28 days before they died, it is crucial to inform the national police service. Then, the deceased is taken to a hospital mortuary by the funeral director. Once the body is examined post-mortem, the coroner will start investigating the unexpected death. As soon as the investigations are done, the Funeral Director will be notified to arrange the collection of the body. Once a collection time has been agreed upon, the funeral director will contact the family involved.
